A literary space created by Derrick Harriell. Derrick Harriell is a poet, author, educator, and literary arts advocate whose work explores the intersections of family, race, music, memory, and the American experience. Born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Harriell is the author of the poetry collections Cotton, Ropes, Stripper in Wonderland, and Come Kingdom. His collection Ropes received the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters Poetry Book Award. Most recently, he co-authored The Voice in Your Head Is God with Grammy Award–winning rapper 2 Chainz, a New York Times bestselling book. Harriell earned an MFA from Chicago State University and a PhD from University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. For nearly two decades, he has mentored emerging writers and fostered inclusive literary communities through his teaching, public scholarship, and creative work. He currently serves as Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, where he teaches creative writing.
